My first garden

The other day, my mother in law gave me a kiddie’s seeds packet, which is an envelope containing a blend of easy to grow vegetables and flowers. I was so excited that I started to organize them by size and colour, even though I do not know what most of them are. I recognize the obvious ones like corn and beans, but the round little things in different colours? Or the tiny fuzzy ones? I will just let them surprise me!

I have always dreamed of growing my own food. I am such a romantic about these things although in reality, I know I am going to squeak, jump, and get goosebumps the moment I encounter worms, spiders, beetles, or any funny looking creature. There’s no shame in being afraid of bugs, right?

As opposed to me, M grew up in the country and used to have his own miniature garden patch when he was a kid. So, of course he was thrilled when I started talking about having my own garden. -Thinking of my husband as this adorable little boy taking care of his plants makes me squeak out of cuteness.-

We got a seeds catalogue, something I did not know existed because I am such a city slicker sometimes, and we already picked out some seeds to order. Some of the items on our list are green beans, cherry tomatoes, corn, jalapeños, purple carrots (exciting!!), and poppy seeds.

We do not have a yard in our house, so we were considering growing whatever we could in pots. And then, we learned that there was a community garden taking in applications for this year. We will find out if we got a spot by the end of the month; I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Otherwise, we will try the pots idea, but I’m really hoping for my own little garden!

Have you ever had a veggies garden? What would be your favourite thing to grow?
